Ep.347.Row34
Robert Tas
Hello and welcome back to CorkRules, a podcast where in each episode we will reveal a wine list frm your favorite restaurants. I'm your host Robert Tas along with Samantha Hohl, wine educator and certified sommelier. Hello Sam, it's great to have you back for another fabulous list.
Sam Hohl
Okay, there, Robert great to be back.
Robert Tas
Before we jump in, let's talk CorkRules. We created CorkRules to demystify wine lists because
we know from experience that sometimes when we get that list handed to us, it can be
intimidating and daunting. Our aim is to help prepare you to navigate that list, find those hidden gems, value lines, or that special bottle that will take your dining experience over the top.
Robert Tas
So sit back and listen as we review your favorite wine list. So today, Sam and I are reviewing Row 34, located in an old textile warehouse in Boston's historic Fort Point neighborhood. They're
known for their oyster selections and serving up the freshest seafood entrees.
This is a cool place and Sam, I'm excited to hear what you think of their list.
Sam Hohl
Yeah, so while this list isn't extensive, it's definitely full of some really fun stuff and some wonderful options to pair with their seafood centric menu. To start out, the 2021 Stone Crusher by
Donkey and Goat is calling my name. This is a skin contact wine, also known as an orange wine, made from 100% russine grape sourced from El Dorado, California.
I love a wine like this to start with because it's complex and fruit -forward with stone, fruit, but also has some great acidity and tannins from the skin contact. Super yummy to sip on and a great pair with food. You could start this with the tuna tartare and sesame cucmber in lime.
This bottle has all these really cool fruit and subtle spice notes to it, so it's really fun to pair with these flavorful dishes that are citrusy or herbaceous.
Robert Tas
Wow, that sounds cool. Great way to start. What else did you see?
Sam Hohl
Yeah, so if you're a red lover, you could try the 2021 Lomoresco Nero Capitano from Sicily. Lomoresco winery is owned and operated by Filippo Rizzo and his wife Nancy. Filippo formally
owned a small restaurant in Belgium serving natural wines and decided he wanted to get into
winemaking himself.
Sam Hohl
This bottle is made from Nero Capitano, which is another name for Capato. It's common to see blends with other grapes, but this wine lets Capato take the spotlight, which makes for a really fresh and light red. It's got delicious cherry and strawberry notes with some sea salty qualities and really bright acid.
This could pair nicely with the seared monkfish since the meatiness of the fish would be ideal with a light red.
Robert Tas
Fabulous, fabulous. Well, this place sounds like it has a very thoughtful list. Any hidden gems, value -wines?
Sam Hohl
Yeah, absolutely. A fun find that also happens to be an affordable bottle would be the
2019 Morick and Villa Tonnay's Hidden Treasures. This bottle comes from a collaboration between Austrian and Hungarian wine estates.
It's a blend of Riesling and Ferment, which are known for both sweet and dry variations of wine. This bottle is a dry version and it's delicate yet complex. It's got floral aromas and ripe stone
fruit, along with some salty and herbal qualities too.
And it's also got some really wonderful acidity. This bottle is ready for some oysters. That's a match made in heaven. It would also be delicious with the steamed mussels with parsley butter.
Robert Tas
What if we wanted to up our game here and have something extra special?
Sam Hohl
Yep, there's some great bottles to celebrate over on this list. But one that caught my eye was
the 2016 Marie Quartin Prisons Champagne. It's made with two -thirds Chardonnay and one -third Pino Blanc, and there's no dosage added, meaning no additional sugar.
Sam Hohl
So it's alive with acidity and it's super dry. It's got these zingy green and yellow apple notes, but also has mineral and salt qualities too. It's really compelling, really bright, and it's going to be so tasty with a variety of dishes on this menu.
You could pair it with some fresh oysters, but it's also a friend to the fried, so the fried oyster
sliders would be awesome too.
Robert Tas
